International Folk Dance

David and Christine created the Saanich International Folk Dancers in 1971 (after being in a group led by David and Louise Taylor dancing at the University of Victoria in the Students Union).

The Winns ran it single handedly for the first year at Fairburn Elementary School before a committee was set up. Pauline was in at the beginning helping with the teaching.

David also organized the first Canadian Morris Dance team in 1974; they were an all male group calling themselves the Victoria Morris Men (now the Holly Tree dancers).

During the Trudeau years the team danced at 1976 Olympic games, venue in Montreal and in 1978 at a folk festival on the Gaspe Peninsula. David was the Squire for many years and also with Christine played a leading role with Saanich International Dancers.

Recent Years

During the past few years David was unable to keep up with the dancing, but was very active on the University of Victoria radio station, CFUV, with his November 11 Remembrance Day broadcasts. He also ran a series of classical musical programme for CFUV. He was a member of the Charles Dickens Society.
